Here's a rough Victorian drawing of what it was, the old Gaelic dress of the saffron léine, which was worn commonly in old Ireland and Scotland for centuries. It's often argued as being the descendant of the kilt, and this connection can be seen in saffron kilts worn by Irish regiments both in the UK and the republic of Ireland.
Also kilts and Scottish highland dress will be permitted as the national dress. Although they are anachronistic with the earliest examples being attested to the 17th century, tartan is arguably very ancient indeed, with the earliest examples of tartan being found at about the 3rd century AD and earlier literary reference.
